Weekend Knockoff #4

Hi there, I’m back again this week to share some great products that I think could be fun DIY projects and much easier on the pocket book :-). These are not sponsored posts, just things I am currently shopping around for.

Do you struggle with finding ideas to decorate your home? Or do you have plenty of ideas but struggle to see the vision of how to do them yourself at home? Or are you like me, too many visions that your job gets in the way of the time you need to complete all the projects?

The weekend knockoff is my weekly round up of home décor that I think I could make myself. I get my inspiration from shopping online. When I am browsing thrift stores or garage sales (one of my favorite things to do), I already have a vision and some direction of what types of things I am looking for.

This week I hit the jackpot at a thrift store while on vacation. Read more about that here.

Here are some of the things I have found inspiring this week:

First up, is this umbrella stand from Pottery Barn. I love the look and I know that I could build this myself. The fact that this doubles as an end table is even more appealing to me. I feel like people are always looking for spots to set down drinks or food outside. I also need something that is portable because we move our umbrellas around the yard as the sun moves. I am thinking bright white, crisp and clean. This umbrella stand retails for $349 and is currently on sale for $249. Um, I think I could make 10 for that price :-).

Next up are these Vintage Dice, also from Pottery Barn. These retail at $19.50 for a set of 10. I want to grab a 2×2 inch board and cut squares. This would take all of about 5 minutes. I love the different colors. My solution would be to paint the dice whatever color you want the dots to be, then cover with the contrasting color. Using a counter sink drill bit, the numbers on the dice would be easy to make. Touch up with paint, lightly distress and voila. How cute are these for decorating a game room? You could easily complete this project without power tools by using a hand saw and sanding by hand as well.

I fell in love with this chalkboard sign from Restoration Hardware. I have a large “cabinet wall” that encloses my fridge. I have been brainstorming ideas for a command center that would still be clean and not too cluttered. I think this would look great!! At $325-$550 even though it’s on sale for $325-$385, I have no option but to make my own! If you don’t want to build the wooden frame, finding a frame and adding some decorative molding would do the trick. Now I have to learn how to perfect the RH Natural Finish you see here.

I have actually been shopping around for an old wastebasket to paint and use as an end table outside for some time. No luck yet, but when I find it, this is exactly what I want to do with it. Paint it a bright color!! This table retails for $79.99 and is on sale for $55.99. Even the cost of a brand new wastebasket at target and spray paint would beat that price!

When I saw this vintage cake tin from Williams and Sonoma I fell in love. I also have seen hundreds of Christmas Cookie tins that are just waiting to be snatched up for 50 cents a piece and painted. Attach a handle, stencil in any word…even cookie and you have a classy way to give homemade gifts. And, it’s something you could use over and over again, even after the holiday season passes. This could be great for lots of different treats including cake, cookies, bars, popcorn, chex mix, puppy chow (if you don’t know what puppy chow is, you have to click for the recipe).

These tray tables at Z Gallerie are decorative and useful! How many of you have a set of old wooden tray tables that could be painted?? These retail for $169.95. I already own a set I plan on painting–for only the cost of paint. Stenciling the table top is a cute idea to make these fit any theme in your home. My family room is a nautical theme, so maybe I will do vintage beachy lettering. I found a set at the thrift store this week for $6.50. That leaves you $163 dollars left for  paint ;-).

Last but not least I want to revisit one of my previous weekend knockoffs. Remember these rope wrapped vases?

Well, I found this treasure at the thrift store (part of my jackpot)…

I am not sure what they were going for here…whether it is supposed to look like bone? Branches? Here is an ugly interesting close up.

Painted ceramic lamp texture

Anyhow, I think if it was painted a solid color the texture gives it an organic feel. In my mind I first thought white. I did a google search on painting ceramic while standing there trying to decide if I should buy it and found this tutorial from House of Hepworths. So I am convinced I will be able to paint this lamp. I keep hearing this little voice in my head going “aqua, aqua,” but I don’t really have a place for an aqua lamp in my house. Well, at least not yet. I am thinking maybe paint it white and cover a lampshade in a fun fabric.

Here is a vision of the aqua I am thinking about

 This lamp is $197.50!!

Hmmm, what’s your vote? Aqua or White??

  1. I love all these great ideas. I’m a thrift store girl myself. I love treasures. Growing up, we always enjoyed garage sales and I loved finding things I could makeover, still do! I think aqua too for the lamp. Everyone needs a little color in their life. Thanks for stopping by Simply Tangerine too!!! I need to give that mason jar a good shake. I’m going to enjoy it tomorrow!!!

    • Lucky girl!!! There’s nothing better than getting a lamp for $8 and a watermelon martini, LOL!
