Thrift Store Lamp Reveal

So the thrift store lamp refurbish is finally finished. It wasn’t hard at all, and the transformation is incredible. I also figured out a way to DIY my own lampshade, so instead of the original shade I bought for $20, I was able to repurpose one I found at a second hand store for $2. It just needed a little help. The total cost of this lamp was $10.50.

If you missed my post about where my inspiration came from, head over to my Weekend Knockoff #4. There you will find a tutorial about painting ceramic as well.

Here is the lamp I scored while thrift store shopping last week.

I loved the texture on this lamp, but not the color!!

Painted ceramic lamp textureI was debating between a white color for the base with a patterned shade, or an aqua colored base with a crisp white shade. In the end, aqua won out. Thanks to those of you who chimed in, I needed the extra push to go for it.

I used a satin finish Valspar spray paint that was a paint and primer in one. It covered really well. I didn’t even sand the piece first, only because when I first attempted, I didn’t think it was doing much at all. I added a very light second coat just for good measure.

I also spray painted the shade. It was originally a dingy white with some scattered stains. I was so excited to paint it, I forgot to take a picture. Oh well, for $2, I couldn’t resist trying. Is there anything you can’t spray paint? Seriously!! :-)

The lamp shade needed three coats for full coverage. The fabric does absorb some of the paint, so I don’t know if this would work on every shade out there, but I am definitely happy with the results. Another option would have been to cover the shade with white fabric using hot glue and some bias tape. If you try this and it didn’t turn out or some reason, you could always cover it and still have a great finished product.

Hope you love it as much as I do!!

As for my giant zucchini (check it out on facebook if you missed it)…I turned it into chocolate cake today. Yep, probably one of the most moist, rich cakes I have ever eaten!! Check out the recipe from Six Sisters Stuff. It’s a great way to use up all that overflowing zucchini from your vegetable garden. Check out my garden here.

  2. Thank you. I inherited lamps and shades from my Grandmother; really didn’t want to replace the shades. This worked to revamp them.
