Father’s Day Gift: Raised Wooden Cooler Chest

I finally get to share another great build with you. I have been working on this for the last week, but it was a secret!! A gift for my husband for Father’s Day.

First of all, I would have never thought of such a great idea if it wasn’t for Jenny at Birds and Soap. I also would have never gotten through this project if it wasn’t for her tips and instructions!! Ana White posted plans on her site as well. I used a combination of the two designs/plans for mine.

I have to admit this was a pretty difficult project for a novice builder!! What made it tricky was tailoring the plans to my own cooler dimensions. Nothing a few more trips back to the store for more wood didn’t fix. This was also my first project that required mitered corners, but that’s another post :-)

The other SUPER EXCITING thing about this project is that I got to use my new Kreg Jig System. Super easy and so worth the money!!

Here is me getting started:

2 by 6s cooler chest

You can see I changed it up a little by using 2 x 6 boards for the shelf the cooler sits on. I found these boards in my scrap pile and didn’t even have to trim them to fit. That NEVER happens!!

Building the frame and putting it together with the pocket holes was a piece of cake.

Dry Fit Cooler

And it fits!! **Huge sigh of relief**

Here is a look at the finished construction…

Raw Cooler

The little details sold me on this design….they are so cool!!

Cooler Spicket

So proud of my shelf that was built with pocket holes AND mitered corners!! Yay!

Cooler Shelf

It’s VERY STURDY with the great shelf supports I found at the hardware store.

Finished cooler

And here it is!! HAPPY FATHERS DAY to my FABULOUS husband who just happens to be THE  BEST DAD to our two boys!!

Open Cooler

This gift definitely equates to relaxing around the pool with friends and family!!

Bottle Caps Cooler

I am going to add a mountable bottle opener (hubby is shopping around for a unique piece). We are debating between facing the front with bottle caps vs. and old vintage beer tin. Which way would you go?? I think either one would look great.

Finished cooler 2

I used the same finish as my Farmhouse Table. I love this rustic color with the satin poly! I can’t wait to start enjoying this cooler chest! Anyone have any great summer drink recipes to share??
